No end in sight to Gaza ‘no-go zone’
Israel vowed to keep areas of the Gaza Strip off-limits to Palestinians until cross-border rocket attacks cease.
“The operations will continue as long as is required to ensure that the fire against us is curbed,” Vice Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told Army Radio on Thursday, alluding to Israel’s artillery barrage against areas of northern Gaza used for rocket launches.
The zone was declared Wednesday when Israel dropped leaflets warning Palestinians to stay away. Terrorist groups launched at least four more rockets, prompting the Israeli shelling.
Bulgaria pressed on Holocaust compensation
U.S. congressional representatives pressed Bulgaria on a World War II-era compensation issue.
The letter urged Bulgaria’s president and prime minister to see that the country’s Jews receive their “rightful share” of the value of a hotel built in Sofia on the site of a prewar Jewish school. Bulgaria’s Jewish community is appealing a Bulgarian court decision from July that rejected Jewish claims to nearly half the property now occupied by the Rila Hotel.
The property was confiscated in 1943, and an administrative court ruled in 1992 that the Jewish community was entitled to just under 50 percent of it.
The letter, sent last week, was signed by two co-chairmen of the Congressional Bulgaria Caucus, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) and Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-S.C.), as well as by Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), the ranking Democratic member of the House of Representatives’ International Relations Committee.

Israel lobbies for U.S. convicts
Israel reportedly wants to extradite two of its citizens jailed in the United States.
Ma’ariv reported Tuesday that Justice Ministry officials are in contact with their U.S. counterparts in hope of having the two Israelis, who are serving life sentences in New York’s Sing Sing Prison for a 1977 murder, transferred to correctional facilities in the Jewish state.
According to the report, Israeli officials would release them eventually since the convicts already have spent 27 years behind bars.
The Justice Ministry had no immediate comment.
Mossad warns of Iranian atomic arsenal
The head of the Mossad said Iran is trying to develop more than one nuclear weapon.
“The concern is that if they manage to acquire the bomb, they will not make do with the fissile materials required for one, but will go on producing larger amounts,” Meir Dagan told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in his annual briefing Tuesday.
According to Dagan, Iran is months away from being able to enrich uranium independently, a key step for making nuclear weapons.
He predicted that Iran would have the bomb within two years after that. Israel has been urging the U.N. Security Council to threaten Iran with sanctions unless it abandons its nuclear program.

U.S. national menorah lit
The U.S. homeland security secretary helped light the National Menorah in Washington.
Michael Chertoff, who is Jewish, took part in Sunday’s ceremony. Chaya Schreiber, a 12-year-old girl from New Orleans whose home and school were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, addressed the crowd of several hundred people who attended the ceremonial lighting, The Associated Press reported.
Kibbutz members suspected in drug ring
A kibbutz in northern Israel allegedly served as a center for a drug-smuggling ring.
Family members on Kibbutz Gesher Haziv, which was settled after Israel’s War of Independence with immigrants from North America, were allegedly part of a ring that smuggled cocaine from Argentina into Israel.
Liquid cocaine was smuggled into Israel in wine bottles, police believe, earning the smugglers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Palestinians barred from border
Israeli officials said Palestinians will be barred from border areas in the Gaza Strip, in retaliation for a Palestinian rocket fire attack.
Officials said soldiers along the border would receive orders to shoot Palestinians who entered restricted areas in the coming days.
"Certainly if the rocket fire on Ashkelon does not stop, there will be a very fierce response, and no option can be ruled out, including a ground operation," Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said in an interview with Israel TV.

Congress passed $600 million for U.S.-Israel cooperative defense programs. Senators urge Bush on Hamas
Seventy-three U.S. senators signed a letter urging President Bush to call on the Palestinian Authority to disarm Hamas before elections next month.
“If terrorist groups gain a substantial foothold in the Palestinian legislature, it will make it exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, for there to be any progress on the ‘road map’ or on the road to achieving a two-state solution,” the letter sent Wednesday said, referring to an internationally backed peace plan. The Bush administration opposes Hamas’ inclusion in the Jan. 25 legislative elections, but prefers to leave the decision to the Palestinians.
The letter follows a House of Representatives resolution last week warning of policy consequences if Hamas joins the Palestinian government. Congress has oversight powers over U.S. funding to the Palestinians, and the Senate letter echoes the warning. “There would be even more severe policy implications if any such groups were then brought into the Palestinian Authority,” it says.
Foxman: No moral equivalence in ‘Munich’
Steven Spielberg’s new film does not posit a moral equivalence between Palestinian terrorists and Israeli Mossad agents, Abraham Foxman said. “The Palestinians are projected as terrorists, brutal in killing innocents without any hesitation,” said Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, who attended a recent screening of the movie, which tells the story of Israeli reprisals after the 1972 massacre of its athletes at the Munich Olympics. “The Israelis are responding in counterterrorism and they project a human dimension. They think and they are challenged by the enormity of taking human life. They are humane, they are considerate and they are struggling with issues the world is struggling with today,” he said.
Indeed, Foxman said, the film, which opens Friday, “is a justification for counterterrorism.”
Group meets to discuss North African Jews
A group that is pushing for restitution for Jews who fled Arab countries wants to preserve Jewish sites in the Muslim world.
Several members of the French branch of Justice for Jews from Arab Countries, which met this week in Paris, said the group should focus on registering Jewish sites as historical sites with UNESCO. The group, convened under the guidance of CRIF, the umbrella group of secular French Jewish groups, outlined several broad aims: to remember the Jews who came from Arab/Muslim countries; re-establish historical truth concerning ancient Jewish communities existing in Arab countries; and collect testimony regarding the conditions under which Jews lived in Arab countries and which led them to leave these lands.
The group will work with several other French Jewish organizations to promote the culture, history, memory and politics of Jews from these areas.

House passes Saudi education resolution
The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a nonbinding resolution urging educational reform in Saudi Arabia.
The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Jim Davis (D-Fla.), notes that “some textbooks in Saudi Arabian schools foster intolerance, ignorance, and anti-Semitic, anti-American, and anti-Western views” and urges the Bush administration to make Saudi education reform an element of bilateral relations.
JTA recently revealed in a special investigation that Saudi Arabia is also funding teaching materials for American public schools that contain anti-Israel and anti-Western views.
The resolution passed on Monday by a vote of 351-1. The sole dissenter was Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas.) It now goes to the Senate.
Rice: Talk of Israeli strike on Iran ‘unhelpful’
Speculation about a possible Israeli attack on Iran is “not helpful,” the U.S. secretary of state said.
“I think the speculation is not really very helpful,” Condoleezza Rice told the Associated Press last Friday. “Israel is, of course, a sovereign state and we’re not in the habit of telling the Israelis how to defend themselves. However, we’ve said to everybody that this region is very volatile and it’s best — and I think the Israelis have said this, too; Prime Minister Sharon has said this — it is best to resolve this issue through diplomatic means, and that’s where we’re all focused.”
The international community is pressing Iran to roll back its nuclear program. Israel fears Iran’s road to a nuclear weapon could be irreversible as early as March.
Israel boycott decision criticized
The Anti-Defamation League condemned a regional Parliament in Norway that launched a boycott of Israeli products.

Cleric arrested in Jerusalem
Israel briefly detained a senior Palestinian Authority cleric for entering Jerusalem illegally.
Sheik Taysir Tamimi, a resident of the West Bank city of Hebron, was arrested Wednesday while trying to attend prayers at Al-Aksa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City. He was released after posting a $6,500 bond and promising not to enter Israeli territory without a permit again.
But police, noting that it was Tamimi’s fourth such arrest in Jerusalem, said they would press for his prosecution as an illegal alien.

Senate passes Iran condemnation
The U.S. Senate passed a resolution condemning anti-Israel statements from Iran’s president, but without provisions calling for the Iranian people to exercise self-determination.
The Senate passed the measure by unanimous consent last Friday, condemning Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s recent calls for the destruction of Israel and his denial of the Holocaust.
But Democrats required two other statements — seeking self-determination by the people of Iran and seeking a national referendum there — to be withdrawn.
