Lapid: Stay course in Iraq

Lapid: Stay course in Iraq It would be a “catastrophe” for the United States to pull out of Iraq, a leading Israeli legislator warned.
Shinui Party head Yosef “Tommy” Lapid and two other members of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee addressed members of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations on Friday in New York, following meetings with Pentagon officials in Washington. Lapid said he was concerned by growing public opposition in the United States to the war in Iraq. Abandoning the effort “will have a domino effect on the Middle East” that would “topple all pro-Western governments, end efforts to democratize the Middle East and encourage fanatic Muslims to continue the war against everything Western, Judeo-Christian, liberal and democratic,” he said.
Lapid also warned that if the international community didn’t put an end to Iran’s efforts to build nuclear weapons, “sooner or later Israel will have to act.” The committee does not speak for the Israeli government, and committee chairman Yuval Steinitz, of the ruling Likud Party, did not endorse Lapid’s stance. “This is a global threat, and it’s not up to minuscule Israel to deal with it alone,” Steinitz said.
