Sharon pursues immigration
Ariel Sharon vowed that Israel would bring in 1 million new immigrants by 2020. The Israeli prime minister made the pledge Wednesday while hosting soldiers who recently immigrated to Israel at his sukkah in Jerusalem. “Israel must have a large Jewish population,” he said. “I have ordered the government to make this a main objective.” Sharon also praised several of the guest soldiers who underwent Orthodox conversions during their army service.
Israeli program gets U.S. grant
An Israeli group that promotes Arab-Jewish cooperation in schools received a U.S. grant.
Hand in Hand, which began in Israeli schools, recently received $400,000 from the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Aid for International Development. The money includes funding to make its curriculum available in U.S. schools.
