Rumsfeld: Seems like old times

Israel and the United States are on their way back to an “appropriate” defense relationship, Donald Rumsfeld said.

The U.S. defense secretary, appearing Tuesday on the Zionist Organization of America’s “Middle East Report” on WNWR radio in Philadelphia, described his meeting last week with Shaul Mofaz, his Israeli counterpart.

“The Israeli Ministry of Defense has taken a number of steps that I consider to be quite positive, and we are on a path as they undertake reforms in how they interact with other countries in the world with respect to various technologies,” Rumsfeld said. “We’re on a path to re-establish a relationship that is appropriate for our two countries.” The United States froze Israel out of a number of defense partnerships in recent years because of Israeli arms sales to China.

The sides ended the disagreement this year with a memorandum of understanding. That document, which is still secret, reportedly provides for a U.S. veto on all Israeli arms sales.
