There Are Nonviolent Activists In Mideast
|
Letters To The Editor: Reports in the U.S. media give the impression that all Palestinian action against Israel is violent, whereas virtually all nonviolent resistance is simply not reported. A good instance of this is the joint protests taking place in the West Bank Arab village of Bil'in in recent weeks.
Every day, Israeli peace activists have been joining Bil'in villagers whose homes are now on the other side of the Separation Wall from their farmlands. Together they have been demonstrating against the expropriation of more than 60 percent of the farmers' land for construction of illegal Israeli settler housing in the West Bank. Israeli authorities have responded with tear gas and beatings, and more than 20 Arab villagers remain under arrest.
Recently, activists and villagers together built a Palestinian “outpost” on the villagers' farmland, challenging the Israeli authorities to get a demolition order for it, even though the authorities have stood by and watched hundreds of Israeli homes built within sight without acting. Jewish activists and villagers together kindled candles in the outpost for the last night of Hanukkah.
As a Jew opposed to Israeli policies of oppression that are turning most of the world against Israel and making Israel the least secure place in the world for Jews to live in, I want Americans, especially my fellow Jews, to know the truth and to end the U.S. support that is enabling Israel to get away with this.
