Palestine summer camp, in Israel

Groups that advocate the right of Palestinians to return to their original Israeli homes are organizing a “Summer Camp in Palestine” in an Israeli Arab town.

The first “Bridges to Roots” camp — for Palestinian youths from Israel, the West Bank and abroad — will “ensure ongoing communication and interaction among the younger generations of the Palestinian communities in Diaspora, and for the purpose of entrenching the spirit of belonging to Palestine,” says a release from the Palestine International Institute and the Association for the Defense of the Rights of the Internally Displaced in Israel.

The camp will start July 3 “in the Northern Palestinian town of Kabool inside the ‘Green Line’ ” Armistice Line, it says.

Nuclear Iran would endanger Israel – U.S. official

A nuclear Iran would present an existential threat to Israel, a top U.S. nonproliferation official told the pro-Israel lobby.

“When the Iranian president makes a major speech calling for Israel `to be wiped from the face of the earth,’ he might be saying exactly what he means,” Robert Joseph, the undersecretary of state for arms control, told a meeting Wednesday of the Washington regional chapter of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

The United States is leading efforts to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions because of its nuclear program.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president “may believe that nuclear weapons are the chosen instrument to achieve his stated goal of wiping Israel `off the map,’” Joseph told AIPAC. “Despite the resulting apocalyptic costs for Iran itself, the regime could miscalculate, or accept those costs in the cause of martyrdom.”

Boehner elected leader

An Ohio congressman close to that state’s Jewish community was elected Republican majority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rep. John Boehner beat Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) 122-109 in the secret caucus vote Thursday.

The pro-Israel community privately preferred Blunt, who as majority whip has taken a lead role in passing pro-Israel legislation and in leading congressional delegations to Israel.

Boehner, however, also has a solid pro-Israel voting record and Ohio Jewish leaders said he reached out to them although his mostly rural southern constituency has almost no Jews.

Boehner was chairman of the House Education committee and some national Jewish groups are wary of his avid pro-school voucher record, as well as his preference for a greater role for religion in the public square.

Blunt was the favorite at first, but many Republicans sought to distance the party from a series of scandals that brought down the previous majority leader, Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas.)
