U.S. report cites Israel, P.A. on rights Israel and the Palestinian Authority are both cited for “problems” in the U.S. State Department’s 2005 report on human rights. The State Department ended its practice in the latest report of including a summary sentence in each country report that said whether human rights had improved or deteriorated.
Instead, it lists “problems” for each country. Israel’s include “serious abuses by some members of the security forces against Palestinian detainees”; “institutional, legal, and societal discrimination against the country’s Arab citizens”; and “discrimination in personal and civil status matters against non-Orthodox Jews.”
The Palestinians are cited for “insufficient measures to prevent attacks by terrorist groups either within the occupied territories or within Israel”; “numerous instances of violence against Israeli civilians, resulting in deaths and injuries in the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel”; torture; and “corruption and lack of transparency.” Jewish anti-Zionists visit Iran A delegation from a Jewish anti-Zionist group is visiting Iran. The group representing Neturei Karta is visiting the Islamic republic in a show of support for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his calls to eliminate Israel, the Jerusalem Post reported. In a statement to Iran’s state-run radio, the group called for “the disintegration of the Zionist regime,” the Post reported.
A fervently Orthodox group of a few hundred people that opposes Israel’s existence, the Neturei Karta has drawn attention by regularly siding with anti-Zionist movements. http://www.jta.org/
