News for 04-01-06

04-01-06 - Army, navy pound Gaza Strip Qassam launch sites IDF artillery hit the northern Gaza Strip with more than 150 shells Saturday, with Israeli gunboats taking part in the attack for the first time. The air force hit open areas of the northern Strip, along with a number of buildings the army said had sheltered rocket launchers.

04-01-06 - Settlers attack Palestinian farmers and international peace activists in Hebron An extremist Israeli settler group of the Ramat Yishai illegal settlement outpost, in Hebron, attacked on Saturday three Palestinian farmers and a Swedish peace activist in Tal Romeida neighborhood in the center of the Old City of Hebron, dozens of olive trees were uprooted in a separate attack east of Hebron.

04-01-06 - Witnesses say settlers attacked Palestinian farmers near Nablus "The Palestinian farmers turned away, but then 40 settlers from Skali Farm and Elon Moreh chased them. Ten of them were armed. They beat the Palestinians, and a brawl ensued. Suddently one of them fired two shots. I found one of the cartridges. The Israeli volunteers demanded that police arrest the perpetrators."....Palestinian witnesses said Saturday that a group of settlers attacked an elderly Palestinian farmer.

04-01-06 - Thursday's suicide attacker was one of the prisoners freed by Israeli forces in Jericho jail raid A Palestinian, who was one of several dozen prisoners set free by Israeli forces during their raid on Jericho prison in March, was responsible for a 'suicide attack' that killed four illegal Israeli settlers and himself late Thursday night -- an attack that was immediately condemned by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas....Three days after the raid the Israeli daily Haaretz warned that Israeli forces were ?preparing for possible (Palestinian) revenge attacks.?

04-01-06 - Arab diplomats protest Israeli 'apartheid wall' Egyptian Ambassador to India Kheir El Din Abdel Latif expressed 'appreciation' of New Delhi's support for the Palestinian cause and lashed out at Israel for inflicting suffering on the Palestinian people by building this security fence.

04-01-06 - Palestinian official vows to punish those involved in Friday's killings

04-01-06 - Middle East Children's Alliance Website We still need your support to send funds to friends and partners in the Gaza Strip who will continue to distribute food parcels to families in need

04-01-06 - Abbas hails Mandela as father of liberation movements "We consider him as the father of all the liberation organisation movements in the world because he is the symbolic fighter for freedom for his people and for the people around the world."

04-01-06 - Fatah gunmen fire guns, defying Hamas PM

04-01-06 - Gaza Strongman Nixes Call for Gun Control

04-01-06 - UN Official Says Israeli Unilateral Actions Diminish Prospect of Viable Palestinian State

04-01-06 - Israeli settlers uproot trees west of Bethlehem Israeli settlers uprooted several almonds and grape trees in lands that belong to Beit Omaer villagers west of the West Bank city of Bethlehem, Wednesday evening.

04-01-06 - Olmert, Hamas Pursue Unilateral Agendas The military has also kept Gaza-Israel crossings, vital for Gaza's struggling economy, closed for extended periods, ostensibly for security reasons. However, Israel doesn't want to go too far, and will allow in just enough goods to avert a crisis.
Keeping the Palestinians at the brink of a major humanitarian crisis as punishment for having a real democracy and for electing a party majorically for its clean form of govt (fatah was corrupt) - the neocon legacy.

04-01-06 - Editor hits back over Israel row ..'But when I re-read the piece, I did not see anything that I felt should not have been said. Maybe it is because I am Jewish, but I think I am very alert to anti-Semitism. And I do not think that criticising US foreign policy, or Israel's way of going about influencing it, is anti-Semitic. I just don't see it.' Accusing the LRB of anti-Semitism only proves one of the points of the study. The knee-jerk responses by members of the pro-Israeli community are like clockwork, they are that predictable.

04-01-06 - J'lem protests equation of Hamas, Israel The protest to Lavrov's comments come against the background of Israeli-Russian tensions stemming both from what Israel considers Russia's tepid position regarding the Iranian nuclear issue and because - along with Turkey - Russia was among the first countries to invite a Hamas delegation to visit following the Palestinian Legislative Council elections.

04-01-06 - The myth of the 'honest broker': Britain and Israel Since the government of Ariel Sharon came to power in 2001, Britain has exported around £70 million worth of military equipment to Israel.

04-01-06 - Ericsson signs $23M contract in Palestine Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson (ERICY) Wednesday said it has been awarded a $23 million contract by Palestinian mobile operator Jawwal.

04-01-06 - America gives tacit approval to West Bank withdrawal Is the US?s apparent willingness to endorse a move which is unlikely to remove the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the list of regional irritants just another example of what two prominent US academics recently described as Washington?s tendency to advance Israel?s interests, even when they are inimical to its own, due largely to pressure from Jewish American groups?

04-01-06 - Elimination of racial discrimination: The case of Israel Creating a Jewish majority is at the heart of Israel's policies and is achieved through the de-Palestinization of Palestinian land. For instance, since 2002, thousands of people have been displaced by the construction of the Wall and its associated regime. Prof. John Dugard, Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories recently observed that "the closed zone is gradually being "cleansed" of Palestinians, where land will in due course be transferred to land-greedy settlers."

04-01-06 - No Conflict Between Islam and Democracy, Rice Says SECRETARY RICE: Well, I certainly think that you hear a passion about a number of issues that I think is very important. You hear passion about the plight of the Palestinians and I think everybody recognizes that these are people who live in extraordinarily difficult circumstances and where the President has said that the only answer to stability in the region for both Israel and the Palestinian people is to have a Palestinian state.

04-01-06 - Keeping It Quiet: The Israel Lobby's Crushing of Dissent So far as I've been able to determine with the help of Google, while the paper and talk about it are all over the Internet, they are missing from the big corporate press as of this writing Which is again, another point of the study itself - the acquiescence of the mainstream American media to the whims of the Israeli lobby.

04-01-06 - Trying to enjoy a spring day Amidst Israeli Shelling " Life should keep going, and that's why we are here, despite the ongoing shelling, just to be able to enjoy our lives".

04-01-06 - Holy Land visit offers insight into dispute We spoke with Palestinian Christians who have descended from the churches founded by the early apostles and whose families have lived in the Middle East for 2,000 years and more.

04-01-06 - Area Jews, Protestants Dispute Israel "Palestinians need and deserve contiguous lands. Settlements in most occupied lands need to be closed. One of the keys for (Palestinians) is permeable boundaries, the free coming and going back and forth," declared the Rev. Dr. Peter K. Nord, executive presbyter of the Presbytery of Baltimore The problem with the arguments by the Israel-advocates, as always, is that the plan for Israel (by its original 'pioneers') was to exclude as many Arabs as possible to ensure a Jewish majority. This was achieved in large part by expulsion. The advocates do nothing to address the wholesale theft by Israel of Palestinian lands for the illegal settlements and illegal wall. This theft, which has gone on for years, is not conducive to peace.

04-01-06 - Presbyterians here vote to invest, not divest, in Israel Presbyterians stunned Jews when delegates at the last General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to explore divesting from certain corporations doing business in Israel. The church said it would aim the economic sanctions at corporations contributing to violence in the region and the suffering of innocent Palestinians or Israelis, particularly in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Note the offical from the ADL labeled the Presbyterian's efforts to divest from Israel over its treatment of the Palestinians as 'anti-Semitic'. Naturally.

04-01-06 - The Rise of Israel's Avigdor Lieberman Non-Jews have always been, at best, an impediment to Israel's Jewishness. The only question has been what to do about them. Lieberman's suggestion is hardly novel. Until he was assassinated, the Israeli cabinet minister Rehavam Ze'evi used to refer to Palestinians as "lice," and compared them to a "cancer" destroying Israel from the inside. He thought that Palestinians should simply be expelled.

04-01-06 - 'Rachel's Words' Live On as Supporters Gather in New York weeks after the cartoon controversy and the mass trumpeting of free speech worldwide, Rachel Corrie was being silenced

04-01-06 - Pipes calls war a success I have been called a neoconservative. I don't exactly know how a neoconservative differs from a conservative. I do. The definition can be found here. Simply put, it's the primary allegiance to a nation other than this one, that makes one a neocon.

04-01-06 - Maestro of the Middle East Israeli Barenboim is no stranger to acts of defiance, whether in his defence of the music of Wagner, his espousal of Palestinian rights that has often put him at odds with his native country, or in a private life that at times has raised eyebrows.

04-01-06 - Portray a realistic picture of Mideast As long as North American citizens are kept in the dark, then the American government and now the Canadian government will continue to overwhelmingly support Israel and ignore the plight of the Palestinians The Israeli lobby counts on your ignorance.

04-01-06 - Visuals Key in Account of Palestinian Plight Hanan Toukan is a graduate of McGill University in Canada and the London School of Economics. Since graduating from her Masters Program at LSE, she has dedicated her life to publicizing the plight of Palestinian refugees living outside the occupied territories.
