08-06-06 - Israel and Hezbollah faces UN spotlight over child deaths She said the number of deaths of women and children in Lebanon was "very high because civilian institutions and infrastructure have borne the brunt of some of those attacks both by Hezbollah rockets as well as Israeli bombardments." One side is no better than the other. The US should support neither.

Ordinary Palestinians are not safe anywhere - not on the beach, not at night, not in their own home. Israel's guns are always turned on them whether or not they've committed any crime.

08-06-06 - Weddings from the heart of Gaza

08-06-06 - Israeli Arabs get cold greeting from Palestinians The rockets have killed 48 people inside Israel in less than four weeks of fighting, many of them residents of Arab villages.

08-06-06 - Robert Fisk: This draft shows who is running America's policy... Israel A close analysis of the American-French draft - the fingerprints of John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN, were almost smudging the paragraphs - showed just who is running Washington's Middle East policy: Israel.

08-06-06 - Besieged Lebanese turn to Internet Hanady Salman, managing editor of the As-Safir newspaper, said she never had the time or interest to keep a diary. But when Israeli missiles struck a convoy of Lebanese villagers fleeing the southern village of Merwaheen on the third day of the war, killing at least 15 people and blowing children into nearby ravines, the 38-year-old mother was galvanized.

08-06-06 - CNN RELIABLE SOURCES I think civilian casualties are also part of the battlefield play for both sides here. One of the things that is going on, according to some U.S. military analysts, is that Israel purposely has left pockets of Hezbollah rockets in Lebanon, because as long as they're being rocketed, they can continue to have a sort of moral equivalency in their operations in Lebanon. KURTZ: Hold on, you're suggesting that Israel has deliberately allowed Hezbollah to retain some of it's fire power, essentially for PR purposes, because having Israeli civilians killed helps them in the public relations war here?
RICKS: Yes, that's what military analysts have told me. Maybe that's why the Israeli Arabs, who have been taking the brunt of the Hezbollah rockets of late, have been left to fend for themselves in Israel, while other Israelis go to the West Bank settlements. I wonder if any West Bank settlements, all of which are Jewish, have taken in any Israeli Arabs.

08-06-06 - 'Moment of opportunity': yes, but only if the US asks Israel the hard questions Who knows what new Hizbullah is rising from the dust, amid the survivors at Qana? ...All Israel and the US have gained from this brutal pounding, and the deaths of hundreds of innocents, is increasing enmity and further isolation from the Arab world. Indeed, in their tacit and lonely support for Israel's bombing of Lebanese ambulances, homes, roads, airports, and state infrastructure, US officials have done the Jewish state no favors.

08-06-06 - Reuters drops Lebanese photographer over doctored image "The photographer has denied deliberately attempting to manipulate the image, saying that he was trying to remove dust marks and that he made mistakes due to the bad lighting conditions he was working under," The Israel-supporters are all up in arms over this photo. First of all, the photo, even doctored, doesn't really add anything to the scene or make it appear any worse. So, it is unclear how this is some kind of conspiracy. Secondly, this will now be wielded as 'evidence' that all photos of Lebanon's devastation are doctored, no doubt. Since one photo was doctored, then all photos that damage Israel must be doctored too; the 'logic' of the Israel-defender. One remedy: look for similar photos of the same scene that were taken by different press agencies.

08-06-06 - A tale of two failed Mideast states Failed states in general, and particularly those in the Middle East, represent potential threats to the US because they could be transformed into terrorist bases. 08-06-06 - Bush Backing Israel Despite Divisions "The crisis in the Middle East today has brought us to one of those rare moments that transcend party and ideological lines. There is no daylight at all between the government of Israel, the Bush administration, Congress and the American Jewish community," said William Daroff, director of the Washington office of United Jewish Communities, the national roof body of local Jewish charitable federations. That's a "rare moment"? Hardly. It is official Congressional and White House policy to pander to Israel.
