Jewish groups to rally for Israel

U.S. Jewish groups are trying to enlist thousands of Jews and non-Jews to greet members of the U.N. General Assembly with a message of solidarity with Israel.
They also want to show Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that his anti-Israel, anti-Semitic and anti-Western policies will not be tolerated.

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, United Jewish Communities and the UJA-Federation of New York will hold a “Stand with Israel” rally in New York on Sept. 20, the first day of the General Assembly, the executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents, Malcolm Hoenlein, said in a conference call Monday.

The rally aims to show solidarity with Israel and support for the war on terrorism and will call for the release of three Israeli soldiers taken captive this summer by Hezbollah and Hamas.

Hoenlein said some 40 Jewish organizations have signed on as co-sponsors, but organizers are trying to get non-Jewish groups involved as well.

Bolton: U.S. could pursue other options on Iran

John Bolton said the United States would seek other means to stop Iran’s nuclear program if the U.N. Security Council fails to impose sanctions.

“We will use other steps, other economic activities, we will work with other countries outside the Security Council as well,” the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations told the United Jewish Communities’ Lion of Judah conference Sunday in Washington.

“The Europeans have again asked us if we would give them another opportunity” to press Iran on the matter, he said.

Israelis discuss strategic cooperation

Officials and academics from Israel, the United States, Turkey and India discussed strategic cooperation.

Monday’s one-day conference, organized by the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, drew senior figures including P.K. Iyengar, an architect of India’s nuclear weapons program. Participants said the four countries shared a commitment to democracy and fighting terrorism and an interest in innovation.

“There is at fundament a strategic convergence on many levels,” said R.S. Jassal, the deputy chief of mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington and a former ambassador to Israel.

Canadian parties’ resolutions blasted

Two Middle East resolutions adopted by Canada’s New Democratic Party are “irresponsibly one-sided and dangerously misinformed,” the Canada-Israel Committee charged in a written statement.

The first resolution, adopted at the Quebec City convention this weekend, called Israel’s response to Hezbollah during the recent war “drastically disproportionate” and described Hezbollah as “a recognized political party with democratically elected members in Lebanon’s Cabinet and Parliament.”

The second resolution also criticized Israel and called for a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Despite the efforts of some caucus members to steer the party toward a constructive set of resolutions, the NDP will now be known for its biased positions and for lending support and credibility to terrorist entities like Hezbollah and Hamas that are committed to the destruction of the State of Israel,” said the Canada-Israel Committee’s national chairman, Marc Gold.
