Top Dems slam Carter book

Top Democrats repudiated former President Carter’s new book on the Middle East.
Howard Dean, the party chairman; Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives; and a number of Democrats in Congress issued statements Monday saying that “Palestine: Peace not Apartheid” did not represent their views.

According to advance publicity, the book argues that Israel’s settlement policy is principally to blame for the failure of peace initiatives in the Middle East. “While I have tremendous respect for former President Carter, I fundamentally disagree and do not support his analysis of Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” Dean said.

Pelosi said Carter is “wrong to suggest that the Jewish people would support a government in Israel or anywhere else that institutionalizes ethnically based oppression, and Democrats reject that allegation vigorously.”

Israeli envoy protests Iranian statements

Israel’s U.N. envoy protested recent threatening statements against the Jewish state by Iran’s president.
In a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Israeli ambassador Dan Gillerman asserted that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s “highly appalling and offensive statements” constitute a violation of the U.N. Charter and an incitement to racism and genocide.

“Every member state must, on account of its membership in the United Nations, denounce and reject these hateful words,” Gillerman wrote Monday.

Gillerman sent copies of the letter to the presidents of the U.N. Security Council and the General Assembly.

Israel-U.S. to develop plane defense?

Israel and the United States are considering the joint development of defense systems for civilian aircraft.
Shaul Mofaz, Israel’s deputy prime minister and former defense minister, met Monday met with U.S. transportation security officials and discussed Israel’s development of anti-missile systems for civilian aircraft.

Officials traveling with Mofaz said U.S. officials planned to visit Israel to study its plans with a view to collaboration.

Mofaz also met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and discussed the Middle East peace process and U.S. efforts to sanction Iran.

Officials said Rice expressed support for Mahmoud Abbas, the relatively moderate Palestinian Authority president.

Mofaz asked Rice to press Egypt to more effectively patrol its border with the Gaza Strip. Israel says terrorists are smuggling anti-tank missiles and TNT across the border.
