Confusion over Middle East 'cease-fire'
|
Israel's Defence Minister Shaoul Mofaz says Palestinian militant groups have decided to suspend their attacks on Israelis at the urging of the new Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas.
But Hamas and Islamic Jihad both say there is no formal agreement on a cease-fire.
Hamas says it is waiting for an Israeli commitment.
But the Israeli Defence Ministry spokesman, Mark Regev, say it is Israel's understanding that the groups have agreed to a cease-fire of about one month.
"We are following very closely developments on the ground," he said.
"There are some positive signs. Some of the organisations in the Gaza Strip seem to be ready for a cease-fire.
"There are signs to that effect. If there's quiet on the Palestinian side, Israel will of course, it'll be quiet on our side too."
