Palestinian refugees give $10,000 to Katrina victims

Palestinian refugees give $10,000 to Katrina victims

(Ramallah, West Bank-AP) Sept. 13, 2005 - He says the amount may be small, but it's the thought that counts.

A representative of a Palestinian refugee council Tuesday presented a check for $10,000 to give to Hurricane Katrina's victims. The check is made out to the American Red Cross.

The spokesman says Palestinian refugees donated the money, and that they understand best what hurricane victims are now going through.

US Consul General Jacob Walles accepted the check at a ceremony in the West Bank. He says the gift means a lot, especially because it comes from the poorest Palestinians.

A Palestinian handed over a check for $10,000 from refugees to a US representative on Thursday, a contribution to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Jihad Tomaleh from the Amari refugee camp near Ramallah, drew parallels between the plight of the hurricane victims and his own people. "Palestinian refugees who have lived more than 50 years displaced from our homes are very sensitive to the Katrina victims."

At the ceremony, Rafik Husseini, an aide to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, used the same Arabic word, "naqba" or catastrophe, to describe the tragedies that befell both peoples.

Receiving the contribution, Jake Walles, the US consul-general in Jerusalem, said it had added significance "because we know it came from poor people."
