Committee praises Israel U.N. move
A congressional committee praised Israel’s ascension to a U.N. leadership role.
The resolution, initiated by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and passed Friday by the U.S. House of Representatives’ International Relations Committee, congratulates Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman, on being elected to a year-long term as a vice president of the U.N. General Assembly. Gillerman is the first Israeli to hold the position since Abba Eban in 1952.
The resolution also calls for expanding Israel’s role at the United Nations, where its exclusion from its natural regional grouping, because of Muslim opposition, has denied the Jewish state positions of influence. “This is an important victory for our friend and ally, Israel,” said Schiff, who is Jewish. “We will continue to work with the United Nations to move Israel to the Asian regional group.”
