Antiwar activist to appear at Yom Kippur service A congregation in San Francisco invited Cindy Sheehan, a critic of Israel, to its Yom Kippur service.
Sheehan, whose son died in Iraq and who has emerged as a leader of the anti-Iraq war movement, has compared Israel’s occupation of the West Bank to the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq and has allied herself with some groups that deny Israel’s right to exist.
The Beyt Tikkun congregation invited her to speak at a service that will include atonement for the Iraq war.
“Cindy Sheehan was accused of blaming this war on Israel, but she has denied that charge,” Rabbi Michael Lerner said in an e-mail to congregants. “We are glad she denies it, because we as Jews strongly oppose the war and also oppose attempts to blame the war on the Jewish people.” Senate introduces energy cooperation measure U.S. senators introduced legislation to create a strategic energy partnership between the United States and Israel.
The United States-Israel Energy Cooperation bill was introduced in the Senate on Tuesday by a bipartisan group of lawmakers. The measure would bring Israeli and American leaders to focus on solving energy crises in both countries. “Just as the Arrow Missile Project has shown that U.S./Israel collaboration can bring results that neither nation could achieve alone, this new program will bring together the enormous technical talents of Israel and the U.S. to devise new solutions to both nations’ energy needs,” said Jack Halpern, senior vice president of the American Jewish Congress.
A similar measure was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this year.
Israeli envoy: Syria harboring terrorists Syria is harboring at least 10 terrorist groups, Israel’s ambassador to the United States said.
Speaking Tuesday in Washington, Daniel Ayalon said Israel would like to see a change in Syrian behavior, but “is not in the business of regime change.”
