Elite school nixes Middle East panel
A New York City private school cancelled a planned assembly on the Middle East after complaints that it represented only the Palestinian point of view.
The Fieldston School panel was to have featured two Palestinian speakers, one of whom advocates a boycott of Israel, and no Israelis, The New York Times reported. An e-mail from the principal announcing the assembly said it would further the school’s “progressive reputation,” but the school, which has a sizeable Jewish population, received a host of objections.
A school spokesman said the assembly was nixed “because it really wasn’t a balanced” presentation, the Times reported.
Israel: Hamas MPs can’t travel to West Bank
Israel will not allow Palestinian legislators from Hamas to travel from the Gaza Strip to a West Bank swearing-in.
In a meeting between Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and top defense officials, Israel decided that Hamas members would be prevented from traveling across Israel for Saturday’s ceremony, Ha’aretz reported, citing Israel Radio. The ceremony will be conducted via video conference.
