U.S. official: NATO not ready for Israel NATO is not ready for Israel’s membership, a senior U.S. official said. “I think if this issue were to be put on the table formally within NATO, I think we’d find it immediately very controversial with a large number of countries saying not ready, not now,” Kurt Volker, the deputy assistant secretary of state for European affairs, told an audience on Thursday at Howard University in Washington D.C. “Solve the Israeli-Palestinian issue first, solve the Arab-Israeli issue first. Israel is not a European country, and after all, NATO is Europe and North America.” Volker said the question was in any case moot because Israel had not asked to join the alliance. NATO was ready to train Palestinian security forces before last month’s legislative elections, which saw a landslide victory for the Hamas terrorist movement.
Mashaal: Ze’evi killers to be released A top Hamas leader said that the Palestinian parliament would release the killers of former Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi. Khaled Meshaal said Friday that the five assassins, who have been imprisoned for the last four years in Jericho under Palestinian, British and American supervision, would be let go, the Jerusalem Post reported.
Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has warned against their release, but Mashaal said that “Israel always threatens and makes assurances, but it does not scare us. We will do what our people need whether it angers Israel or not.”
Hamas won a landslide electoral victory last month in Palestinian legislative elections and recently named another Hamas leader as the Palestinian Authority’s future prime minister. Ze’evi was assassinated by Palestinian attackers at a Jerusalem Hotel Jerusalem in October of 2001.
