TV ad works on Israel at U.N.
The American Jewish Committee is behind a TV ad campaign aimed at improving Israel’s status in the United Nations.
The campaign is being aired on CNN in New York and other major U.S. cities as the U.N. General Assembly meets in its annual session this month.
Israel out of most of S. Lebanon
Israel said its forces have pulled out of most of southern Lebanon’s former Hezbollah bastions.
The army said Sunday that 80 percent of Lebanese territory conquered during the war on Hezbollah had been handed over to U.N. peacekeepers.
Israeli media have speculated that the withdrawal could be completed by Rosh Hashanah, but military officials have said it depends on the full deployment of UNIFIL in southern Lebanon.
Under the U.N. Security Council resolution that ended the 34-day war, UNIFIL was to be expanded to 15,000 personnel and be backed by an equal number of Lebanese troops.
But the bolstered UNIFIL force currently stands at less than 5,000 troops.
