Syrian group threatens abductions An obscure Syrian terrorist group threatened to abduct Israeli soldiers. In a statement read by Al-Jazeera television Wednesday, the Men of the National Resistance vowed to emulate the border kidnapping tactics of Hezbollah in order to bargain for the release of Syrians held in Israeli prisons. According to the report, the apparently new group operates in the Golan Heights.
Israeli security sources played down the threat, noting that the Golan is populated by Israeli Jews or by Druse who, while professing loyalty to Syria, generally are peaceful. Hezbollah firm on swap Hezbollah says it won’t relent on its demand to release two captive Israeli soldiers only as part of a prisoner swap. “There is no unconditional release. It is not feasible,” Energy Minister Mohammed Fneish, a Hezbollah representative in the Lebanese government, said Wednesday.
Hezbollah captured Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev in a July 12 border raid that also killed eight soldiers, and the group insists on releasing them only in exchange for hundreds of Arab prisoners in Israeli prisons.
Israeli media has speculated that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert would settle for a compromise whereby three Lebanese prisoners go free. ADL blasts Annan for Iran visit The Anti-Defamation League came out against Kofi Annan’s plan to meet the Iranian president. The national director of the ADL, Abraham Foxman, said Wednesday that the U.N. secretary-general’s talks with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran this weekend would be akin to meeting with Hitler.
“This is a man who time and again has vowed to destroy Israel and who openly questions the Holocaust,” Foxman said.
Annan, who was in Jerusalem on Wednesday as part of a regional tour to consolidate the U.N.-brokered cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah, defended the planned meeting, saying it was his job to maintain contacts with international leaders. Calif. mayor won’t apologize A mayor in California refused to apologize for bestowing an honor on a Palestinian who called Hezbollah an “amateur in terrorism compared with Israel.” Santa Cruz Mayor Cynthia Mathews provoked the ire of local Jewish leaders earlier this month when she presented a key to the city to Afif Safieh, a longtime member of the PLO, at a talk in front of 250 people, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Mathews said the gesture was not a means of taking sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but was meant to endorse Safieh’s vision of a two-state solution. Jewish leaders note that the PLO includes groups like the Fatah Movement’s Al-Aksa Brigade, whose members would like to “wipe Israel off the map of the world,” said Rick Litvak, rabbi of a local Reform synagogue. Livni spared lawsuit Danish authorities turned down a request to prosecute Israel’s visiting foreign minister for alleged war crimes.
The Attorney General’s Office in Copenhagen rejected the appeal filed by a left-wing lawmaker against Tzipi Livni, who visited Denmark this week as part of a European tour, Israel Radio reported Wednesday.
The lawmaker had argued that Livni should be arrested and prosecuted for her role in Israel’s recent offensive against Hezbollah, which drew international censure due to the high civilian toll in Lebanon.

Israel urges Iran sanctions Israel’s foreign minister urged the U.N. Security Council to impose sanctions on Iran.
Tzipi Livni said Sunday that recent conciliatory remarks by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were aimed at staving off sanctions over his country’s nuclear program when an Aug. 31 deadline set by the Security Council passes.
“One thing is clear: The world must not delude itself that Iran seeks some sort real dialogue. They want to buy time. They must not be allowed to do so. Sanctions must be under way, and the sooner the better,” Livni told Channel 2 television.
Iran has defied Western pressure to abandon technologies that could be used to produce nuclear weapons, but Ahmadinejad said in a speech over the weekend that the program was not intended to threaten the “Zionist regime.”
At the same time, Iran announced that it was opening a new heavy-water reactor, which could produce materials for nuclear bombs. UJC meets officials on homeland security Jewish community officials met with administration and U.S. Senate officials to ensure the release of Homeland Security money to nonprofits.
Officials of the United Jewish Communities, the umbrella body for Jewish federations, met last week with staff of the Senate’s Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee.
Staff discussed sharpening language in the Homeland Security Department’s appropriation bill to ensure that nonprofits receive $25 million, as they were allocated in 2005 and 2006; that the funds may be used to defend nonprofits from potential, and not just actual, threats; and that states would be encouraged to spend some of the $1.3 billion they receive on nonprofits.
They also said George Foresman, the department undersecretary who administers the money, was responsive to demands for the release of the 2006 money.
More than half of the 2005 money, which is just now reaching its targets, was allocated to Jewish organizations.
Jewish groups blast Israeli actions Some U.S. Jewish groups signed onto a letter calling Israeli military actions in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip “vastly disproportionate.”
The “open letter to the Middle East” was published last week by United for Peace and Justice, a coalition of left-wing groups. It said Israel’s reactions to the capture of three soldiers by Hamas and Hezbollah were “vastly disproportionate and are in no way commensurate with a right to self-defense as defined under international law.” It calls “for an end of U.S. military and political support to Israel’s violations of international law.”
Among the 120 signatories are groups like Jewish Voice for Peace and Not In My Name. The letter also calls for an end to the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq. Danish festival leaves out Israel A cultural festival on the Mideast in Copenhagen has drawn criticism for failing to include Israel.
According to the Danish daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende, “Images of the Middle East” aimed to improve Denmark’s reputation in the Arab world following controversial cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad led to worldwide Muslim protests, some of them violent.
But organizers of the festival, which started Aug. 12 and runs through Sept. 20 in Copenhagen and eight other Danish cities, have drawn sharp criticism because they presented an anthology of writing from the Middle East that does not include Israel.
The paper reported that the Saudi royal family, a main sponsor together with the Danish government, insisted on leaving out Israelis. The paper said politicians should reconsider whether it was worth financing “such a superficial and amateur cultural festival.” http://www.jta.org/

Israel deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure in both Palestine and Lebanon
|
After Palestinians kidnapped the soldier on June 25, this from a Reuters article of the same date :
Israeli leaders ordered the army to prepare for "urgent military action" and a "harsh response," including targeting civilian infrastructure and possibly striking at elected leaders of the Hamas-led Palestinian government, officials said.
Likewise, according to an article in the New Yorker by noted investigative reporter Seymour Hersh, it was Israel's strategy in Lebanon to target the civilian infrastructure in order to "turn" the people against Hezbollah:
The initial plan, as outlined by the Israelis, called for a major bombing campaign in response to the next Hezbollah provocation, according to the Middle East expert with knowledge of U.S. and Israeli thinking. Israel believed that, by targeting Lebanon’s infrastructure, including highways, fuel depots, and even the civilian runways at the main Beirut airport, it could persuade Lebanon’s large Christian and Sunni populations to turn against Hezbollah, according to the former senior intelligence official
Amnesty has condemned Israel for its deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure in its latest report on Israel and Lebanon. Here are the findings of Human Rights Watch for Israel/Lebanon.

08-26-06 - Disarming Hezbollah put on hold ISRAEL has dropped its demand for the immediate disarming of Hezbollah and begun to focus on persuading UN forces to stop the flow of weapons into Lebanon...."It is not that we have given up on disarming Hezbollah in Lebanon, but we see it as a process and the most important thing is ? to prevent their strategic rearmament," So that the US can attack Iran and not have fear that Hezbollah will in turn fire volleys of rockets at Israel?

Even more perplexingly, the government itself - as is well known by now - has officially informed Israel's Supreme Court that it did not recognize the "Fundamental Agreement" as binding. This has made the Agreement useless in practice, since the Church and Catholic organisations cannot rely on it in their day-to-day dealings with the State and society In short, Israel failed to stick to the agreement with the Catholic Church, among others. What a surprise.
