04-28-07 - Palestine & Peace: The Challenges Ahead by Hanan Ashrawi we do have the results of these elections. 04-28-07 - In Gaza, holding out hope for safe landing "It was the most beautiful place in all of Gaza. 04-28-07 - Just an optical illusion If any American president were to give a small cough and say, in a half-whisper, "hmm, I am considering my steps concerning Israel," our country's excellent economic situation would immediately turn topsy-turvy. Israel's international credit line would instantly freeze, the dollar would soar, and so would our inflation rate. Our balance of payments surplus would become a deficit and foreign investment would flee Israel many times faster than it came. After all, the world knows that without American backing, tiny Israel would quickly revert to its natural proportions.
Therefore, it really does not matter whether or not the economic aid ends in October. What is important is that Israel continue to enjoy the political support of the most powerful nation on earth. After all, were it not for America's veto in the United Nations Security Council, economic sanctions, a la South Africa during its apartheid regime, would have been imposed on Israel long ago. Without that veto, Israel would never have been able to continue fighting the Second Lebanon War when every other country in the world wanted it stopped as soon as it began. This writer laments the fact that Israel has to depend on American political and economic support. So do I. It's been sixty years - time for Israel to sink or swim on its own. If Israel can't make it without our support, then Israel should seriously ponder the question - why is that? Perhaps its time to change their behavior and learn how to get along with their neighbors. American support is not a sure thing and won't last forever - despite the best efforts by the Israeli lobby and government that seek to so clusterf&*k the two nations together that it would be near impossible for America to ever extricate itself from that unhealthy relationship (which is why they do it).

04-28-07 - Borders Spell Trouble for Arab-American More recent episodes that provoked concern include one in which border agents reportedly Googled the name of an Ohio man and then questioned him about a letter to the editor he had written to The Toledo Blade regarding events in the Middle East.

04-28-07 - Three women, one voice for peace: Group seeks to bridge Israeli-Palestinian divide

04-28-07 - Babes and Bikinis: Israel Plans to Revamp Its Image The project began six months ago when Israeli officials in the United States discovered (through market research) that men between the ages of 18 and 35 were uninterested in Israel, and considered the country "irrelevant.".....Maxim is going to run a special Israel edition this July that will promote the country to its 2.5 million readership, and the magazine hopes it will revamp Israel's image in the eyes of young American men. .....Saranga said Maxim is an excellent platform for delivering this message and will target the audience it is hoping to convert -- young men......Lindsay Citerman, an Israeli who studies Judaism in Jerusalem, said, "Tel Aviv is a sexy city, but I am not sure if this is the best way to sell Israel to Americans."

Israel has to resort to T&A ops (in the US only, oddly) in order to win over Americans. Why is this campaign solely directed toward Americans (young men, at that)?

04-28-07 - Property battle This subsidized colonization of Christian-Palestinian land must stop. It continues to steal the human dignity of the Palestinian people, Christians and Muslims. It is an insulting treatment in contradiction of the Balfour Agreement, international law, and everything America stands for.

04-28-07 - Strange bedfellows More significantly, Abdullah II is said to have told the Israeli delegation that clauses in the Arab Peace Plan pertaining to the Palestinian refugees' right of return should be understood as referring to "compensation" not "repatriation", and that "everything will be consensual and that the Arab Peace Plan was not actually a plan but merely a talking point."

04-28-07 - Frisch School Seniors Lobby Congress - Students Travel to Washington to Meet with Congressmen and Senators "As future leaders of the Jewish community, it is necessary and important to lobby Congress in support of Israel,"

04-28-07 - From March: Israel PR Public Relations Pros Hold Syria, Iran War Exercise "As Israel's IDF Homefront command is presently holding exercises to protect Israel's civilian population in the event of conventional and non-conventional warfare, Israel must be prepared to win the image and digital battle as well," Know something we don't? One thing is sure - Israel cares more about and puts more effort toward covering up for its crimes than it does about the rule of law and actual democracy. This attitude and policy has been foisted upon our government via the neocons.

04-28-07 - On West Bank, questions linger amid small hopes Most Palestinian Christians were not allowed into Jerusalem to celebrate Easter. Most were simply turned away. A few found a way in. In contrast, Jews and Christians from around the world were welcomed with open arms.
What will it take for the American people to see this crisis for what it really is and insist that the Israeli government be obliged to follow international law? When will we elect legislators and a president who are not afraid to stand up and stop this apartheid, this travesty, this inhumane treatment of yet another indigenous peoples?

04-28-07 - Israeli Democracy For Jews Only? Only recently, Israel's Shin Bet (secret police) let it be known that it would "disrupt the activities of any groups that seek to change the Jewish or democratic character of Israel, even if they use legal means."

04-27-07 - DHS releases security funds The U.S. Homeland Security Department released $24 million in funds for securing non-profits. The delay in releasing the funds, first earmarked in 2006, was caused by DHS bureaucrats who preferred to reserve the money for imminent rather than potential attacks. Jewish groups, backed by lawmakers in Congress, lobbied for the funds' use for potential attacks. Last year, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff intervened to release the money.

04-27-07 - Three Ex-Terrorists 'Former terrorists' don't get to enter the country, let alone traipse around giving speeches at campuses nationwide. That is, unless they are doing so for propaganda purposes for the benefit of the Israeli lobby. Americans are being deceived.

04-27-07 - Failing to Hold Israel Accountable for War Crimes in Lebanon In late January the State Department delivered a potentially explosive report to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The classified report asserts that Israel may have violated the Arms Export Control Act with its use of American-made cluster munitions this past summer in Lebanon. Multiple contacts to both offices indicate neither Biden nor Pelosi has any intention of pursuing the matter. In contrast, a congressional investigation 25 years ago helped persuade President Ronald Reagan to suspend cluster munitions to Israel for six years. This Congress, however, will not call Israel to account for its actions.
The US won't even hold Israel accountable for war crimes it committed against these guys.. Israel is almost never held to account by us or anyone for its flagrant violations of law, which only serves to encourage them to continue to do so.

04-27-07 - Israel: Controlling Jewish Destiny Does not Require Controlling that of the Palestinians Contrary to some of the rhetoric emanating from Jewish organizations here, no one I spoke to in Israel likened Israel's situation today to that of European Jews in the 1930's, with Ahmadinejad playing the role of Hitler. Israelis find that kind of rhetoric both laughable and offensive. From admitted Zionist M.J. Rosenberg.

04-27-07 - Unesco Report Details Attacks on Education Worldwide Universities in Nepal and the Palestinian territories were also subjected to attacks. In the Palestinian territories, the report says, "there were 299 incidents of shelling and breaking into schools, directorate offices, and universities by June 2004; 36 teachers, 622 pupils, and 200 university students have been killed by January 2007." 04-27-07 - Finkelstein discusses Israel's human rights record Finkelstein also touched upon Israel's security wall: "If Israel is building the wall to incorporate the settlements, then the wall is clearly illegal under international law."

Also, he claimed that according to historian Benny Morris' research, "what happened in 1948 was an ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians from the disputed territories, citing one author's claim that "the ethnic cleansing was anchored in the Zionist philosophy of transfer..." Indeed, Finkelstein said, "according to Morris, the biggest mistake they made was they didn't expel every single last Palestinian in 1947, because then this would never have happened today."

04-27-07 - Al Haq: British government being sued for complicity The British government is being sued for failure to adhere to international law. Specifically the suit cites British complicity with the Israelis who blatantly violate the rights of the Palestinians.

04-27-07 - Palestinian children's art stolen ?An important part of our work is the ability to bring Palestinian voices to people in the United States,? said Birthright Unplugged co-founder Hannah Mermelstein in a press release. ?This is a sad reminder that members of our community will resort even to theft to silence these voices.? I can't get over this. This is supposed to be America (land of the free). And we all know just who would be behind something like this. Who doesn't want Americans to see the Palestinian side of the story? Who doesn't want Americans to feel any sympathy for Palestinians?

Hagel for President!!!

Obama has fully transformed into the asskisser of the AIPACers. Shame. Won't be getting my vote for that reason alone.

04-26-07 - Congress considers Jerusalem resolutions Resolutions in both houses of Congress promote the unity of Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty. Both resolutions are timed to commemorate 40 years of Israeli sovereignty throughout the city, which will be marked in June. .....The nonbinding resolution introduced Wednesday in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) calls on President Bush to stop exercising his waiver of a law that mandates moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, and "calls upon the President and the Secretary of State to repeatedly affirm publicly, as a matter of United States policy, that Jerusalem must remain the undivided capital of the State of Israel."

Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.) countered that in Israel, soldiers found guilty of doing so were punished. .....The American Jewish Congress lobbied strongly for the bill.
People were not 'held responsible'. The problem with this piece of legislation for Israel is that in its exhaustive research of that conflict, Human Rights Watch found no such evidence that Hezbollah was using human shields. In fact, Israel only recently was caught (on tape via AP) doing that very thing. Add to that the fact that Israel, knowing that a ceasefire was imminent (expected in 3 days), fired a million cluster bomblets into mainly civilian areas of Lebanon.

04-26-07 - In Ahmadinejad's Iran, Jews still find a space The irony of Israel's war of words and propaganda with regard to Iran and its alleged threats against Jews/Israel: Iran's Jews are safe and under no threat. In fact, Israel's refusal to make peace with her neighbors is the main exacerbating influence there (and elsewhere).

04-26-07 - Israeli anxiety over 'enemy within' Arabs make up nearly 20% of the population, but they have long complained of discrimination, and official figures tend to back their case. Why are they considered 'enemies within' when for the most part, they are only calling for Israel to be a true democracy and for equal rights for all of its citizens? Why does that have Israel's panties in a bunch? Isn't that what they purport to be - a democracy?

04-26-07 - Top IDF officer: We knew war would not get abducted soldiers back "After a couple of hours it became clear that we would not get the kidnapped soldiers back through military means," Eisenkott told students at a Nahariya school. So then why did they continue on in their campaign to destroy Lebanon, bombing (sometimes fleeing) civilians in the process?

04-26-07 - New plan advocates land swap between Israel, PA Kadima MK Otinel Schneller's new realignment plan advocates a land swap between Israel and the Palestinian Authority whereby the three Arab Israeli villages in the triangle area will be transferred to Palestinian control in return for the annexation of the three largest settlement blocks of Ariel, Gush Etzion and Modi'in..... His early work in Washington promoting the dubious merits of an anti-ballistic missile programme, for example, was sponsored by Paul Nitze, a powerful insider who devoted a lifetime of intrigue to boosting east-west tensions and US defence spending. Nitze served as godfather to the neoconservative movement in the 70s, correctly calculating that a fusion of the pro-Israel lobby with the military-industrial lobby would create an alliance of unstoppable power.
